Lab 3 LAN Cabling and Workstation Configuration

Scenario

You are a network administrator working for a large company. The network engineers at headquarters have sent you some Cisco routers, PIX firewalls, switches, and hubs to install. These devices are already configured. Your job is to set them up with the right cables, to configure the workstations, and to test the new installation, using ping.

Steps

  1. Plug in all cables between routers, switches, firewalls, hubs, and workstations. See the lab topology drawing.
  2. Power on the routers, firewalls, switches, hubs, and workstations.
  3. Configure the workstations for the correct IP addresses. See the lab topology drawing.
    1. On Windows, use the Network Connections Control Panel.
    2. On Linux:
      1. Start the Console to get to a command line prompt.
      2. Type yast to get into Yet Another System Tool.
  4. Test the new installation using the ping command.

What concerns do you have for the future for this network? Assume that you and your co-workers will now have the job of operating and monitoring this new "real-life" network. Based on your experiences setting it up and any problems encountered, what will you be keeping an eye on? What problems may occur?
